CHAP Questions from Consumers
Will CHIP eligibility change under the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act?
The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) allows states to expand Medicaid eligibility to people earning up to 133 percent of the federal poverty level. In 2014, if a state chooses to expand Medicaid, children ages 6 to 18 in households with income between 100 and 133 percent of the federal poverty level will be eligible for Medicaid, rather than CHIP. PPACA also changes the method that states must use to determine whether a person is eligible. Eligibility will be based on modified adjusted gross income and will not consider income disregards, assets tests, and resource tests.
